You can drive in Indonesia with your International Driving Permit from your home country along with your home license as long as you’re a tourist visa holder.
If you drive in Indonesia, you should bring your IDP + your home license and car registration with you, you can get International Driving License from automobile associations in your home country for example AAA in the US, ANWB in the Netherlands and NAF in Norway.
Notice: Indonesia isn’t part of the 1949 Geneva Convention on Road Traffic, you aren’t allowed to drive with only your home driving license. Driving in Indonesia with only your home driving license considered illegal.
Only foreigners with KITAS or KITAP holder can apply for Indonesian driving license, converting from your local license to Indonesian license is not possible.
Minimum age required for driving a car and motorcycle in Indonesia is 17 years old (25-26 years old for rent a car).
For driving a motorcycle or scooter in Indonesia, you need A category endorsed on your International Driving Permit and for driving a car not exceeding 3500kg having not more than 8 passenger seats with a trailer up to 750kg you need B category endorsed on your International Driving Permit. Driving scooter in Indonesia with only B category license considered illegal.
However, if you are holder of driving license issued by ASEAN member states (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) you can drive with only your home driving license as long as you’re on temporary visa – such as tourist visa.
